DAY 2 EL CALAFATE

Breakfast. In the last 30 kms of the Calafate to Perito Moreno gravel road, we enter into the Glacier National Park.
The first part of the road we will appreciate the typical steppe of La Patagonia Argentina with an important variety of outstanding birds species like the long black neck swans, the flamingos, etc. The particular yellow color of the fields due to an uncommon pasture named Corion deserves special attention. In the National Park we will find the overwhelming spectacle of the Perito Moreno Glacier, an ice cap that extends 600.000 hectares of a protected area. Perito Moreno is the biggest glacier in the Glacier National Park (there are 356 glaciers), being 5 km long and 60 meters high above the water level. Known all over the world just because of its process of rupture, the front part of the glacier tends to grow and reach the coast, closing the way of the waters of Barzo Rico River and creating some kind of natural water storage, where the water level grows over 20 meters. Then the water starts to filter through the glacier, ending with the very expected rupture which attracts tourists all over the world.
The last one occurred in march 2004, but the show will go on.

Maybe the next time it happens you could be one to appreciate the thrilling spectacle of big pieces of ice breaking off the main surface of the glacier and making a loud noise as they fall into the water full of wonderful ice floes.
DAY 3  EL CALAFATE
